You can reach Langkawi by sea using ferry services or cruises.
Express ferries provide regular services daily to Langkawi. There are four (4) ferry departure points to Langkawi :
- Kuala Perlis jetty in Perlis (45 minutes travel time)
- Kuala Kedah jetty in Kedah (1 hour 15 minutes travel time)
- Georgetown jetty in Penang (2 hours 30 minutes travel time)
- Satun in Thailand

Cruises is a novel way to take a holiday to Langkawi. Cruises are of varying duration depending on the ports of call en route to Langkawi. Embarkation points are at Port Klang and Singapore. Cruise packages are operated by Star Cruise (Tel: +603 2161 7798).
By Road
You can get to Langkawi by road, either by driving or by bus. As Langkawi is an island, you need to take a ferry trip to cross the sea to Langkawi island. You need to arrive at either one of the four jetties listed above.
If you are driving from Kuala Lumpur, it takes :
- six (6) hours to reach Kuala Kedah jetty. view map
- seven (7) hours to to reach Kuala Perlis jetty. view map
- five (5) hours to reach Georgetown jetty. view map
You can also take a bus to
- Alor Setar and take a taxi or local bus to Kuala Kedah jetty and then proceed by ferry to Langkawi.
- Kuala Perlis and take a taxi or local bus to Kuala Perlis jetty and then proceed by ferry to Langkawi.
By Rail
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB, also known as Malayan Railway) provides comfortable and economical rail services from Kuala Lumpur (and any major city in Malaysia) to Alor Setar and Arau. From Alor Setar or Arau, you can take a taxi or bus to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis respectively and then proceed by ferry to Langkawi.
